Chicago Greeter turns neighborhood knowledge into a welcome for visitors
The free volunteer program asks for advance requests, giving residents hosting guests a way to plan a more personal city introduction.

Showing someone a city can begin with the places you know how to explain. Chicago Greeter, produced by Choose Chicago, connects visitors with local volunteers for free explorations shaped by neighborhood knowledge and shared interests.
The program's request form allows people to describe their group, interests and accessibility needs, including whether they are Chicago residents hosting others. It asks for at least ten business days' notice. An average visit lasts two to four hours, and a requested visit cannot be scheduled for the party's arrival day.

Submit one request per group and give realistic date options rather than assuming a particular volunteer or route is guaranteed. Language preferences can be included, with the program doing its best to accommodate them. Check for the response email and wait for confirmed arrangements before building another appointment around the outing.
Residents who enjoy sharing the city can also explore volunteering. The program says previous experience is not required, but enthusiasm alone is a starting point: be ready to learn the role and help visitors experience a place at a comfortable pace. The interesting connection may come from an everyday detail a local can explain better than a list of famous sights.
